The Dubai Police are known for their fleet of high-performance supercars including a Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Aventador but their latest acquisition is a hoverbike . Created by Hoversurf, the bike is essentially a combination of a drone, motorcycle, and helicopter.
According to the department, the hoverbike can reach altitudes of up to 5 meters (16.4 feet) and hit speeds of 70 km/h (43 mph).
The hoverbike can carry up to 300 kg (661 lbs) and operate for approximately 20-25 minutes on electricity. It remains unclear how the bike will be used but the department suggested it could see service doing traffic duty and helping to ease congestion.
While it doesn’t look like the safest police vehicle on the market, Hoversurf says the model successfully passed a number of tests to ensure it can operate in extreme conditions. This is critical as the bike will be forced to deal with extreme heat and dust.
Interestingly enough, the hoverbike can be remotely controlled and effectively become a large drone. In this mode, the bike apparently has a range of up to 6 km (3.7 miles).
Besides showing the hoverbike, the police department unveiled a “smart bike” which has been equipped with eight cameras that provide a 360° view around the motorcycle. The electric bike can hit speeds of 200 km/h (124 mph) and can be used for up to eight hours at a time.
